Introduction to hunting by Valérie Gauthier

Hunting is a captivating activity that allows you to connect with nature while developing valuable skills. Getting started with hunting is a great opportunity to explore this practice and see if you enjoy it before fully committing. The introductory licence thus offers a wonderful chance to explore the world of hunting before you dive in.

In my early days, I didn’t apply for an introductory licence because I was unaware of its existence. I would accompany my partner on hunting trips, where we had unforgettable moments. I first felt the adrenaline during one of his hunts, an experience that literally changed my life. Before that day, I occasionally fished, an activity I enjoyed and still appreciate. However, once I discovered hunting, my interest quickly shifted to this new passion. Over the years, I have become a true enthusiast, or should I say a devoted fan, haha! Today, I engage in various types of hunting, but my favorite is undoubtedly moose hunting.

For those interested in starting hunting, it's crucial to understand the different steps and licences required. In this article, we will explain what the introductory licence is and guide you on how to start your adventure legally and safely.

What is an introductory licence?

The hunting introductory licence allows you, once in your lifetime, to acquire all categories of hunting licences for the current year, even without holding a hunter's certificate. To do this, you must first obtain an authorization number from the Ministry of Environment, Fight Against Climate Change, Wildlife, and Parks. This licence is designed for beginners who have not yet obtained their hunter's certificate. It provides an opportunity to learn the basics of hunting while adhering to current regulations.

Why obtain an introductory licence?

Safe learning

  • The introductory licence allows new hunters to learn safety rules and hunting techniques under the supervision of an experienced hunter.

Practical experience

Supervision

  • When hunting with an introductory licence, you have the same rights and must adhere to the same obligations as a regular hunter. You must carry your licence at all times during your hunting trips and be accompanied by a resident aged 25 or older, who holds a certificate appropriate for the weapon used.

Young 12-year-old hunter and her introductory licence

This year, I wanted to share my passion by dedicating some of my time to a 12-year-old novice who had applied for an introductory licence. Her first experience was a memorable success. Kynaé Croisetière proudly poses with her very first game, a beautiful black bear. We wish her many more exciting adventures to come.

Initiation to hunting is an enriching experience that requires proper preparation while respecting regulations. With an introductory licence, you can start your adventure safely and legally. Always make sure to hunt responsibly and enjoy every moment spent in nature.
