As deer hunting season approaches, I am often asked about my go-to recommendations for an optimal hunting experience. Let me share with you my best suggestions and my main favorite products (clothing and equipment).
by Daniel Gilbert,
hunting professional and host of the show The Hunting Beast
Basic outfit: underwear
Underwear is the first base layer to stay warm. You'll need a set that wicks away moisture while retaining heat. The Sportchief one is also equipped with a ScentZro antimicrobial treatment which prevents the proliferation of bacteria responsible for bad odors. Stretchy, it's really an effective outfit to wear under our hunting clothes for cooler temperatures. Here is one of my favorites “Jay” bottom and top underwear for men
Hunting clothes
For your hunting suit, I suggest you have two (2) at least if not three (3), one for mild fall days and your travels, and another for colder days during your long days on the lookout. The last one will be useful for freezing temperatures.
My favorites are:
- “Predator” coat and pants for mild temperatures;
- "Equinox" hunting coat and pants" for its versatility between milder or cooler temperatures since it has a detachable insulated lining;
- “Dynamo” hunting coat and pants for colder temperatures;
- “Voltage” winter hunting coat and pants for extreme cold temperatures in Canada.

Hunting boots
We all know that boots are one of the most important items for us to spend hours on the lookout for, so here is my pick:
- “Vortex” hunting boots (man) - Athena (female)
- The "Grizzly 2.0" with good insulation of more than 1200gr. These rubber boots are ideal for swampy places and plains.

Hunting accessories and equipment
The gloves are of very high importance, so my allies are:
- Hunting gloves "Blacktail"
- Of the Sportchief heated gloves which prove very interesting for colder days including lightweight heated gloves which can be put as an undercoat.
The socks are also extremely important, minimum 5 to 6 pairs of socks for hunters who are conscientious about their comfort:
- A pack of multipurpose socks (3 pairs) "Alpha"
- 2 pairs of heated stockings and 2 spare batteries, including the black heated Sportchief socks.
For the cou, it is important to keep our heat inside. The head and neck are 2 places where we lose a lot of our heat. I would opt for the Face cover "Hunting Beast" Collection Jason T. Morneau.
At the level of the head, I would favor the wool beanie on the lookout and cap for long distance travel.
The backpack is an essential accessory for demanding hunters, so here are my suggestions:
- Sportchief “deluxe” hunting backpack.
- For hunters for whom silence is golden, I recommend the ultra-quiet “Ghost” hunting backpack.
What should your hunting backpack contain? ? Here are the most important things like:
- Lighter or match
- Your ammo
- Knives for gutting your game and stone for sharpening
- Binoculars
- Spare clothes
- Calls
- Food and water
- GPS
- Odor eliminator
- Olfactory lures
- Flashlight and headlamp
- A cushion specially adapted for hunters on the prowl
- Woods for ratling.
To conclude, a firearm which has been adjusted, with a good glasses chosen according to the type of hunting you recommend, a belt which gives good speed of execution like the CG Elite and above all, the practice at shooting ranges to check that your equipment is adjusted and ready for safe use are all good practices that every hunter should absolutely follow.
I wish all hunting enthusiasts to be careful and make the most of these special moments we spend in the forest and HAPPY SEASON TO EVERYONE.
